The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
