Minister States MoD Examining Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, while staff have been advised to avoid talking about classified matters in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for Defence Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD officials have been told not to discuss classified material while riding in China-made cars.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every cars from China, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Security Context

The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

The broader security situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and caution in all aspects of government activities, from vehicle usage to discussions practices.
